What is THCV?

Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) belongs to the class of cannabinoids, which are compounds found in various plants of the cannabis plant family, including CBD and THC. Unlike its well-known counterparts, THCV, which can be found in both marijuana and hemp plants, does not have any psychedelic effects. Although THCV was first identified in 1973, recent advancements in isolating cannabinoids have made it more accessible for researchers to investigate its properties. THCV has experienced a resurgence of attention as new research sheds light on its therapeutic potential.

What are the benefits of THCV?

Although research on THCV is ongoing, several studies suggest that THCV may have therapeutic potential in managing diabetes and obesity. One of the ways THCV may help with weight loss is by curbing food cravings and appetite by increasing satiety.  Additionally, THCV may assist in managing type 2 diabetes by aiding in the regulation of blood sugar levels. Researchers have found that THCV can mitigate motor inhibition and shows promise as a treatment for Parkinson’s disease.

How does it work?

All cannabinoids work by interacting with the endocannabinoid system in the human body. This system is also present in animals. The endocannabinoid system is a system of chemical signals and receptors. CB1 receptors mainly reside in the brain and regulate memory, pain perception, appetite, and motor activity. CB2 receptors exist throughout the body and regulate the digestive system, immune system, and various organs. Humans produce endocannabinoids that naturally regulate the body. Cannabinoids mimic endocannabinoids and act on the CB1 and CB2 receptors. THCV reduces appetite and increases focus and motivation by blocking CB1 receptors in the brain. It has the opposite effect of THC, which activates CB1 receptors.

What are the side effects of THCV?

There are currently no known side effects of THCV.

There are no known medication or food interactions, but make sure to consult with your doctor before adding THCV to your regimen.

How can I buy THCV?

THCV is not subject to the same restrictions as THC because it lacks intoxicating effects. THCV products often incorporate additional cannabinoids to enhance their effectiveness. Products containing 0.3% or less THC are considered hemp products and are available to individuals over 18 years old, although the age limit may be lower in certain states. It is essential to find reputable products because the FDA does not regulate hemp products. Third-party labs should test products and provide a certificate of analysis outlining all the cannabinoids’ quantities in the product.
